![]() Overall, the book entertained me enough to finish, but had a host of issues that made it unpleasant to read. While in the end, the topic allowed the discussion of a meaningful issue, I could not make myself interested enough because Reacher would not stop talking about him. Finally, I absolutely did not care about the Blind Blake story line and it went on for too long. The nightingale is the one I fell in love with and I just finished Lee Childs Killing Floor. Unlike the subsequent volumes, 'Killing Floor' is written. I was very annoyed at how her character was treated through the book as an object of affection and not as a legitimate officer of the law, which I almost didn’t realize at first, given the descriptions of her. Published in 1997, 'Killing Floor' is the first Jack Reacher novel in the long Lee Child series featuring the larger-than-life Army Veteran drifter with a chip on his shoulder crisscrossing the USA bringing an unlikely justice to the inexplicable troubles that come his way. This book did not need to have any romance in it to work and it felt forced. Especially at the beginning, Rosco’s breasts and overall attractiveness become too much of the topic of conversation. Since it was the second book of the Jack Reacher series, he was a little less in charge than most. I thought the sexist descriptions of women in this book were also distracting and disappointing. Breaking down that metaphor, in a way that can be extended in many other situations, amounts to the concept that he walked like someone walking, which is exactly what he is doing. Not only is the comment problematic and ableist, it shows the way metaphors were often unnecessary and repetitive. ![]() The one that bothered me the most was when Reacher says that he walked across the room with “the grim determination of a crippled person trying to walk”. The metaphors Child used were often cliche, annoying or both. Read 15 reviews from the world’s largest community for readers. Many sentences kept repeating the same idea and could have been removed. The writing style was often clunky and in need of editing. Aside from that, there was a lot about the book I did not like. I thought the book had some racist and sexist undertones that bled onto several characters’ personalities. All Jack knows is that he didn't kill anybody. He's just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he's arrested for murder. In terms of what I liked about the book, I thought the mystery and the steps taken to solve it were interesting and it was planned in a very coherent and intelligent way.
